… Asankrangwa District Immigration Commander alleges

Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI), Mr. Francis Kofi Apau, the Asankrangwa District Commander of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is alleging that National Security Operatives stole GH¢2.8 million when they raided Resort Holiday Hotel and X&D casino on 7th May 2021.

In a petition dated 7th May 2021 and copied to the Regional Commander, Ghana Immigration Service, Sekondi, the DSI, in a litany of embarrassing accusations, fingers DSP Samuel Azuguh as the ringleader in the shameful act.

According to the DSI, “at about 16:15 hours GMT today 7th May 2021 a team suspected to be national security operatives numbering about twenty (20) stormed Asankrangwa township in a Rambo style to conduct an operation. The team was led by one DSP Samuel Azuguh and made up of three uniformed police officers with the rest in plainclothes (mufti). It is important to note that, the other members of the team in mufti were wearing earrings and grown heavy beards.”

He continues that “the team visited two places namely Resort Holiday Hotel and X&D casino all in Asankrangwa Township.  At the Resort Holiday Hotel, immediately the team entered the premises they destroyed all the close circuit television cameras (CCTV), took the system unit (hard drive) of the CCTV cameras and forced open their cash safe, and made away with an estimated amount of Eight Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢800,000). They then proceeded to X&D casino where they rounded all the people that were therein and collected every item found on them including phones and money. The suspected national security team again tempered with the CCTV cameras, broke into their cashier room and made away with about over Two million Ghana Cedis”.

ALLEGED NATIONAL SECURITY OPERATION IN ASANKRANGWA

At about 16:15 hours GMT today 7th May 2021 a team suspected to be national security operatives numbering about twenty (20) stormed Asankrangwa township in a Rambo style to conduct an operation. The team was led by one DSP Samuel Azuguh and made up of three uniformed police officers with the rest in plain clothes (mufti). It is important to note that, the other members of the team in mufti were wearing ear rings and grown heavy beards.

The alleged national security team were all wielding fire arms: the leader DSP Azuguh wielded a pistol, the other two uniformed police officers had AK 47 and those in mufti carried pump action guns and pistols. They came in with two Toyota land cruisers with registration numbers WR 2109-21 and VR 3492-16 and a Nissan pickup with registration number AC 1892-19.

The team visited two places namely Resort Holiday Hotel and X&D casino all in Asankrangwa township.  At the Resort Holiday Hotel, immediately the team entered the premises they destroyed all the close circuit television cameras (CCTV), took the system unit (hard drive) of the CCTV cameras and forced open their cash safe and made away with an estimated amount of Eight Hundred Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢800,000). They then proceeded to X&D casino where they rounded all the people that were therein and collected every item found on them including phones and money. The suspected national security team again tempered with the CCTV cameras, broke into their cashier room and made away with about over Two million Ghana Cedis.

It was at X&D casino where the Immigration Officers I delegated to go and ascertain the situation encountered the alleged national security operatives. The Immigration Officer in the person of ASI Emmu paid appropriate compliment to DSP Azuguh (team leader) and enquired as to where the team comes from and the purpose for the operation. DSP Azuguh refused to give the Immigration Officers any information concerning their exercise.

To the surprise of everyone, about six members of the suspected national security team attacked the two Immigration Officers, handcuff them and subsequently ceased their phones and personal belongings in a spectacle to show power. All these happened in the glare sight of the Divisional Police Commander by name C/Supt Nana Kumi. He later intervened for the Immigration Officers to be released.

The attack on the Immigration Officers was unwarranted and we take strong exception to that. We humbly plead with management to investigate the issues concerning the attack on the Immigration Officers.

The National Investigation Bureau (NIB) Officer for Wasa  Amenfi West Municipal Assembly at this juncture came to the scene and requested to take details of all the operatives and as well take inventory of the items they collected to officially report on their exercise. But surprisingly, the leader after reluctantly giving his name as DSP Samuel Azuguh ordered his team members to bored their vehicle and sped off without allowing for inventory to be taken.

The team took away with them six Chinese nationals and are alleged to have taken with about Three million Ghana Cedis (GH¢3,000,000), gold bars and quite a number of phones.

I respectfully submit for your information and directives, Sir.
