It is the afternoon of Sunday, May 14th, 2023, and loud tunes of ‘Sweet Mother’ is booming over loudspeakers somewhere at Gulf Hills, behind Achimota Forest in Accra.
Women, principally female polling station officers of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are either seated or moving in and out of the compound. It all looks like a normal Mother’s Day celebration until one goes in to take a closer look.
It is a political event, and the hostess is one Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei. It would have been alright, except that the event was taking place at Gulf Hills, Achimota, in Greater Accra, and Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei is the sitting Member of Parliament for Akropong Constituency in the Eastern region of Ghana. Dokua, as she is famously known, is very far from home. She is currently busy campaigning to become the next member of Parliament for Okaikoi North, which is an orphan constituency. The Lapaz seat, a traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) enclave, was sent into the orphanage by Fuseini Issah during the 2020 general elections.
Over the weekend, Dokua spent tens of thousands of Ghana cedis sharing 6-yard pieces of Akosombo Textiles (ATL) clothes to hundreds of NPP women at Okaikoi North, in her bid to annex a parliamentary seat in another region even whilst occupying a seat in another region.
Eyewitnesses also suggest that the six yards of clothing also had an unspecified amount of cash hidden in it.
If she succeeds in the unlikely misadventure, it would be a political first since Ghana accepted democratic rule in 1992.
Dokua is currently a deputy minister of Trade & Industry. She was formerly Deputy Minister of Information. She was made a Deputy Minister of Information under the first Akufo Addo government even though her media and information management background was absolutely zero, and she is currently the Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry with a similar pedigree in trade and commerce.
